Mardi Gras Madness with Flutter FETTI®

Mardi Gras party with Flutter FETTILaissez les bon temps roulez! Who’s ready to let the good times roll? The Flutter FETTI crew certainly is! While we love any reason to celebrate, Mardi Gras is one of our favorite holidays. Where else can people experience centuries-old traditions mixed with mind-blowing merriment? Grab a slice of King Cake, throw (several dozen) beads around your neck, fill your pockets with some 14” Flutter FETTI Confetti Sticks, and enhance your Mardi Gras fun by using Flutter FETTI products to help celebrate the season!

Mardi Gras season kicked off on January 6th and is in full swing. Pace yourself, you’re in for a wild ride as the party continues with more than 50 parades rolling throughout various neighborhoods in February.

Wondering what exactly is a Krewe? According to our good friends at Wikipedia, “A Krewe (pronounced in the same way as “crew”) is an organization that puts on a parade or ball for the Carnival season.” These are the awesomely talented people who work on the floats and costumes. If you’re lucky, a member of the Krewe will toss you some beads or a gold doubloon as they float on by. Be on the lookout for one of our 18” Airless Launchers showering parade goers with purple green and yellow Flutter FETTI.

Here’s a sneak peek inside a few of the Krewes we’d love to hop aboard.

Mardi Gras_streamersKrewe of Bacchus Whether you favor a refreshing cup of grape juice or a rich merlot, the Krewe of Bacchus doesn’t disappoint. Celebrities including Will Ferrell, William Shatner, and New Orleans Saints Quarterback Drew Brees have portrayed Bacchus, the Greek god of wine. We certainly can see William Shatner shouting “Beam Me Up!” with an Master Blaster in hand shooting out 2” X 40’ tissue Streamers over the crowds. With over 25 floats (yes 25!), including several super floats, the Krewe of Bacchus is a must see.

Krewe of Zulu: The Krewe of Zulu Social Aid and Pleasure Club is well known to parade goers for throwing coconuts (called ‘Golden Nugget’) into the crowd. Good Luck being one of the lucky ones who can catch one! One of the earliest and still the most prominent of the African-American social clubs, the Krewe of Zulu draws huge crowds.

14in Mardi Gras SwisherKrewe of Rex:  All hail King! The Krewe of Rex rolls right after the Krewe of Zulu. Wondering why the official Mardi Gras colors are purple, green, and gold? The honor goes to the Krewe of Rex in creating this tradition. Don’t be left out as Rex rolls by… Our 14” Swisher Mardi Gras Confetti Tube coordinates perfectly with his highness! The tube contains purple, green, and yellow tissue Flutter FETTI, a noisemaker, and purple, green, and gold metallic pompoms at the opposite end of the tube.

Tardy for Mardi? 5 Last-Minute Mardi Gras Party Tips!

Mardi Gras maskYou’re still recovering from New Years Eve, Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine’s Day when the annual Mardi Gras celebration comes up quicker than expected.   As a Mardi Gras party host, this means the pressure is on and you need to get your act together fast.  It’s time to heed some advice from the experts.  Here are 5 excellent last-minute tips to help you throw an astounding Mardi Gras party!

1.  Don a mask – The host or hostess is usually expected to construct an elaborate Mardi Gras costume full of glitz and glamour, but when you’re in a rush a simple mask can do wonders.   It props up any costume, whether half-finished or non-existent.  You transform from an ordinary host or hostess to an international man of mystery or intoxicating Wonder Woman, respectively.  A mask automatically puts you in the category of costumed reveler and that’s exactly where you want to be.

2.  Order confetti & streamers – Forget going to the store to find last-minute decorations.  The good ones are sold out or they don’t have what you want anyway.  Go online and order something that takes your Mardi Gras party from ordinary to extraordinary.  Flutter FETTI has the world’s most incredible confetti sticks and streamers that are engaging, colorful, and impress your guests when you need it most.  Try 14” Flutter FETTI Confetti Sticks customized with green, purple and gold or 14” Mardi Gras Swishers that consist of a confetti launcher, noisemaker, and pompom stick!  For a great way to welcome your guests, toss 18” Airless Launchers with Metallic Streamers and amp up the mood from the moment they arrive.  The earlier you order the better and last-minute orders do not incur a fee!

3.  Make easy finger foods – Mardi Gras is associated with hearty, wholesome, and homey New Orleans cuisine.  Creations such as gumbo and jambalaya often come to mind.  But if you’re rushed for time, replace those tantalizing Southern classics with easy Southern ones.  Whip up or order Cajun fried chicken, shrimp po’boys, and fried green tomatoes.  These comfort foods still resonate with Mardi Gras and are easy to eat at any party.

4.  Create one big punch – While Southern cocktails like Mint Julep and the Hurricane are classic Mardi Gras drinks, acquiring all the ingredients can be an arduous journey.  When you’re running late, throw together a big spiked fruit punch bowl that can satisfy every palate and create a more communal atmosphere.  It’s as colorful as any other Mardi Gras cocktail and no one will think that you didn’t have time to think of something better!

5.  Host best costume contest – This last-minute tip is particularly useful if all you wear is a mask because you can exclude yourself as the host.  A ‘best costume contest’ stirs excitement amongst all your guests and involves little to no effort.  The only thing you need is a prize and that can be anything you want, even something you already have lying around the house!

Reflections by Ronee – How to Enjoy Riding A Mardi Gras Float

Ronee Mardi Gras CostumeBy now you all know that my favorite event in the entire world is Mardi Gras (I mean, c’mon, just check out my costume this year)!  I love everything about it, especially the colorful, flamboyant and outrageous floats.  Mardi Gras floats are elaborate works of art and the krewes that operate them are passionate beyond belief.  This is not just a partying event to them – it’s a lifestyle, a proud history, and an annual presentation of cultural heritage.

Years ago I had the pleasure to be one of the lucky people to join a krewe on a float and holy cow… it was the ride of a lifetime   One thing I definitely remember was the massive pile of beads.  We had so many that by the end of the parade we were literally throwing bags of beads into the crowd just to get rid of them!

Perhaps this year you are one of the lucky ones to be invited aboard and if that’s the case, I’ve got a few tips for you:

Get In Cheerleader Shape

Riding a float is exhilarating, but it’s also hard work.  Standing and throwing beads for hours on end is no walk in the park. Plus, you have to wear masks, which by the middle of the parade, you are ready to pull off and throw in to the crowds. Be smart and get in shape before your parade debut.  The classic route is to hit the gym and take some runs.  You could also engage in activities similar to your tasks on the Mardi Gras parade float, such as dancing at the club or rooting on your team at a sports event.  Find your inner cheerleader and channel all that energy for the big day!

Connect With The Crowd

The crowds are the best part of Mardi Gras.  When riding the float, feed off the crowd’s energy to connect with those around you.  Make eye contact, give a big smile, and wave enthusiastic hellos.  Keep your body moving, and inspire everyone to continue cheering long after your Mardi Gras parade float has wound past!  People also love props and there are plenty of options besides the usual bead toss.  Dazzle the entire crowd with multi-colored biodegradable tissue confetti from 14” Corkscrews Confetti Sticks or stun them with a sparkling spectacle of Metallic FETTI Strips from 18” Airless Launchers.   Step it up a notch by launching pound after pound of confetti through a “Baby” Gerb Continuous Flow Confetti Blower and create a magical Mardi Gras scene that will ignite pandemonium!

Remember The Kids

Despite its reputation, Mardi Gras is not all about beads, breasts, and booze.  It’s truly a family-friendly affair and generations of family members from grandparents to grandkids line the streets in anticipation.  Besides the wild Bourbon Street portion, most of the parade route runs through historic neighborhoods and residential avenues.  That means your parade float behavior should always remain respectful – so be kind and keep that mask on!  Otherwise, feel free to point to someone in the crowd and throw well-aimed bead tosses at them.  It is after all the most wild and exciting party of the year!

Whether it’s your first time on a Mardi Gras float or you’re a grizzled veteran, the experience is always worth the ride.  Just get in shape, keep it PG, engage with the crowd and the rest is easy.  I hope to see you out there!

6 Tips On How To Plan Ahead For Big Events

Mardi Gras party with Flutter FETTIBig events sneak up quick.  It may be summer now, but winter events like New Years Eve will be here before you know it.  And spring?  A spring event like Mardi Gras can’t wait until the new year.  It’s vital that you start planning ahead and nail down the foundations for your big events to come.  Here are some tips on how to plan ahead from your experts at Flutter FETTI:

 Set a date first

It’s such a basic concept, but it’s the most important piece of the puzzle.  The date that you set for your event is the focal point by which everything else revolves.  Some are easy to decide (there’s only one time for New Years Eve) and others are more flexible (Mardi Gras stretches over multiple days).  Without a specific date in mind, you can’t confirm a venue, hire a band, or invite any guests.  So once you’ve set a date, you can begin to work on everything else.

Create a budget with wiggle room

Of course, with every big event you have a big budget.  To create a budget, you have to think about every little detail, including venue, food, drinks, décor, labor, entertainment, favors, and invitations.  The challenge of planning ahead is that some costs change over time, so every budget should have wiggle room, or an emergency fund, from which you can alleviate any unexpected or excess costs.  Fortunately, by planning ahead you can often get better deals or give yourself time to make changes in your plans.

 Pick an appropriate venue

Your choice of venue has the greatest impact on your party’s atmosphere and outcome.  A huge indoor space in an urban center will have a completely different vibe than a secluded outdoor beach setting.  The goal is to pick a venue that best suits your theme, guests, and plans.  For instance, if you plan to use X-6 Double Barrel Confetti Launchers to mark the New Year with a burst of color, then you need a place that features high ceilings or no ceilings at all.  By planning ahead, you often have a broader choice of venues than those who look last minute.

 Search for sales and discounts

When you give yourself plenty of lead time, you give yourself plenty of opportunities to evaluate your plans and find good deals.  Event planning can be an expensive venture, therefore sales and discounts on invitations, food, drinks, décor, and party favors can improve your financial situation or give you more money to spend elsewhere.  Sign up to receive emails from preferred vendors or call companies to see if you qualify for a bulk discount on your order.  For example, by joining Flutter FETTI’s mailing list, you can received discounts for confetti products like 14” Flutter FETTI Confetti Sticks and 18” Airless Launchers with Metallic Streamers – both perfect for any event!

 Line up entertainment

Food, beverages, and décor can usually wait until you get closer to party time.  But entertainment needs to be booked or purchased well in advance.  Live entertainment, like the best bands and DJs, get booked up quick.  Popular party features, like 6” Continuous Flow Confetti Gerb Launchers and large audio/visual rentals, are snapped up or reserved well before the month of the event.  By planning ahead, your New Years party or Mardi Gras float will have the best assets to give your guests the most awesome celebration.

 Get the word out early

You don’t have to send out invites or sell tickets super far in advance – most of your potential guests just aren’t ready yet.  However, you can certainly start to get the word out and get people thinking about your event.  Use social media, like Twitter and Facebook, to send out a teaser, such as a fun photo with the title “Half Way to Mardi Gras”.  Or set up a countdown clock on your website to get people excited about your New Years Eve party.  A little marketing can go a long way.

Mardi Gras Essentials – Make Your Party More Colorful & More Fun

Mardi Gras Essentials including Flutter FETTI confettiMardi Gras is not your typical celebration.  You can’t just show up in jeans and a t-shirt and expect to blend in with the crowd.  Mardi Gras is a celebration that induces all the senses with exhilarating sounds, dramatic colors, and outlandish sights.  Only when you add some flair to your everyday outfit will you truly understand the essence of the holiday.

To make your Mardi Gras celebration more colorful and more fun, purchase some of these essential products:

Beads:  You know what they are and you know what they do to Mardi Gras crowds.  Beads come in all shapes and sizes, from standard purple, green, and gold spheres to ones with hanging Fleur de Lis, creepy antique masks, and jester shoes.  You don’t have to toss them though – wearing them is just as cool.

Masks:  Similar to the masks from the Venetian Carnival, Mardi Gras masks make you look mysterious and alluring at the same time.   Go for a simple eye-covering on a stick or pick an elaborate mask that covers the entire face.   Throw in some sequins, satin, and feathers and you’ve got a mask you’ll want to wear all year round.

Confetti Sticks:  There are many options out there, but the 14” Flutter FETTI Confetti Stick is the best!  It’s a confetti thrower without Co2.  You just flick the tube with your wrist and watch 1,800 pieces of Flutter FETTI flutter, fly and float high into the air!  There’s also the 14” Mardi Gras Swisher Confetti Stick, a confetti thrower, pom-pom, and noisemaker all in one – you just can’t beat that!  Give them to all your friends and watch magic fill the air.

Hats:  Talk about something that doesn’t require much work.  You put it on your head and leave it there until you lose it or some intoxicated man steals it.  There are sequin jester hats, furry bucket hats, ridiculously over-sized top hats, and much more.  If you want to blend in with the Bourbon Street crowd, that harlequin-patterned beer mug hat is sure to do the trick.

Tiaras and Crowns:  For the ladies, there are feathery headbands and purple fedoras.  For the men, velvety purple crowns that evoke an air of royalty (minus your goofy grin).  That golden rhinestone tiara may make you feel like a princess, but at the bar on St. Charles Avenue you sure won’t act like one.

Confetti Launchers:  Humans toss beads, but mechanized launchers blow away the crowd with constant streams of confetti!  For the people lucky enough to make and ride the parade floats, Continuous Flow Gerb Confetti Launchers are the ultimate addition to any float.  They are totally self-contained, require no electricity, and blow Flutter FETTI 75 feet high into the air.  They are easy to setup, easy to use, and are real crowd pleasers!

Costumes:  Costumes are no joke during Mardi Gras.  Flamboyant, theatrical, and downright amazing, these things are extremely complex and take a lot of planning.  If you don’t have the time or creativity to build such a sensational work of art, consider buying a pre-packaged costume.  The original costumes may be the ideal option, but the purchased costumes are a strong runner-up.

Cocktails:  You don’t have to drink alcohol to enjoy the fun at Mardi Gras – virgin Bloody Marys and sugary sodas give you all the energy you really need.  However, if you choose to imbibe alcoholic beverages, there are some that are better to put in your hands than others.  Unlike dark brown Abita beer, cocktails exude a colorful nature and zesty flair.  Try “The Hurricane”, a Prohibition-era classic, or a proper mint julep for all you Southern strollers.

Food:  The only way to survive the Mardi Gras madness is with a drink in one hand and some food in the other.  This isn’t the land of hamburgers and hotdogs though – here in New Orleans they specialize in beignets, crawfish pie, seafood gumbo, and other Cajon and Creole classics.  After a few bites of this and a few bites of that, you’ll wish every holiday was as tasty as Mardi Gras.
